Probably the biggest part of the migration process is finding suitable accommodation for you and your family to stay in on arrival at your destination. There is, however, a huge demand for temporary furnished accommodation in Melbourne and it’s suburbs so there are a few things you should consider when looking for, or booking, your accommodation.
When should I book my accommodation?
The simple answer is, as early as you can! Due to demand, a large number of our properties are booked many months in advance. Some of our accommodation is booked for 3 months (some even longer). We recommend that to secure the accommodation of your choice, you give us as much notice as possible. Payment of the deposit secures the accommodation for you. (Please refer to ‘Terms and Conditions).
In our experience it is much easier to secure your accommodation first, even before you start thinking about flights and furniture transfer. These are things that can be arranged to fit in with your accommodation reservation. Remember that the accommodation you choose will be your base in Melbourne area for the first few weeks/months of your new life so it is very important that you get it right the first time.
How long should I book the accommodation for?
No one can answer this question except you! What we can say however is that many new migrants book furnished accommodation through us for anything between 2 weeks to 12 weeks (sometimes even longer). The accommodation we provide should be seen as a ‘home from home’ for you before you settle down into something a bit more permanent (i.e. before purchasing your own property or renting un-furnished accommodation). The duration of your stay with us will depend on lots of things, such as when your furniture is due to arrive, how well you know the area and when and where you find work. The security of our fully furnished accommodation will give you a comfortable base from which to do your ‘research’. Remember as migrants ourselves we will always be available to offer you any help and advice you need. How long will it take for my furniture to arrive?
Usually between 6 and 8 weeks. However your freight forwarding agent will be able to give you more precise information. How long does it take to find unfurnished, longer-term accommodation?
This depends largely on which suburb you choose, what kind of property you wish to rent, and more importantly how much rent you are willing to pay. The rental market in Melbourne is in favour of the landlord with very few properties lying empty. It is important to remember that lower rent properties tend to be of a very low standard and very high quality, well situated properties, come at a premium. It is important that you take your time to find suitable accommodation in a good location for the right price. Be prepared that this may take a few weeks.
